Statement of intent
For my first project, the theme I am looking at is Texture. I plan to look at different types of texture, such as man- made and natural. These two textures are good textures to focus on because they will offer me the opportunity to compare and contrast different types of texture. In my opinion I think the topic is good as it allows you to be more creative in your own way. For example I am going to be looking at leaves, fruits, metals and trees. To show my photographs I am going to be building my own website on Weebly. The reason we use this is because it is easier to use and presents our work in a very professional way. Also at the end of this project I am going to get all of my best photos together and create a final gallery of images.
For my initial research I will start looking at texture photographers and at the moment I know a couple whose names are Aaron Siskins and Edward Weston. Personally I chose Aaron siskins because he is a photographer that takes pictures of man made things, for example he takes pictures of the road and focuses on the white lines. He brings out the texture in such high detail by choosing the perfect angle and he does not only take 1 photograph, he takes 10 to 15 photos every time from different angles.
The reason I chose Edward Weston is because he takes black and white pictures of fruit and vegetables, bringing out the texture of the objects which makes it look very professional. I will also be looking into Edward Weston to inspire me and my own outcomes and to help me with the studio set-up and lighting. This is on the grounds that I like the manner in which he takes his photographs; they truly stand apart and that makes him a professional photographer in my opinion. He is additionally exceptionally imaginative with his various thoughts as a whole and I really admire his work.
MY first initial thoughts were that this theme was all about natural textures such as fruits, leaves and feathers. Then after I started to explore a bit more and have realised that there is a lot more opportunities that I can have, such as man made, I can use this to improve my work. Also I can combine and contrast the different textures. To do this I can take studio shots as well as going outside to explore t6he different range of textures. This can be useful to allow me to expand and experiment on my work by doing this in photoshop.
There are a lot of things that I might want to learn and these things include;1. utilise more unique camera strategies, the justification for this is supposing that we continue to utilise similar methods again and again I need to develop my knowledge and skills. This is great since I can show my maximum capacity of 7 how well I see how to involve a camera in various manners. 2. I need to learn how to use the camera on manual settings, such as learning how to use the ISO, white balance, aperture, exposure and shutter speed. This will help me to capture good images and know how to improve as I go along. .3.To take photographs on location and in the studio This will be a major piece of my photography so I might want to know how to utilise it and realise every one of the various settings 4.How to get to the final gallery picture. I need to know how you would put all of your final pictures together to get that higher grade.
The camera that I am going to be using is a DSLR cannon camera. This is the camera that I am going to be using to take my photos on. Also I would like to use my phone camera to experiment and also use some other thing like telescopic lenses to see the wide range of effects that I could get and create. I am going to try my best and put effort into my creativity in photoshop. The things that I am going to try to learn within photoshop is how to use the adjustment layer for black and white. Also I want to learn the other technique exposure, levels, colour, saturation and contrast. Also there is more that I could try which is magic cut to create patterns within my work.
I have approximately three months to create my website. In these three months I would like to achieve final images and good production. I aim to complete my initial research within three weeks. By doing this it would allow me to have enough time to learn how to skillfully photograph with a camera. So by the time it has been the 4th week I would have had enough time to show my progression. After that I will continue to develop my work in photoshop and be prepared to go out with my camera and capture new images to enhance my project. Once I have finished the project then I will select my best image outcomes and then display them in my final gallery.
Once my project starts to progress I will then start to use annotations throughout my web page by labelling all of my ideas and development that I have done up to date. This will give me a chance to go through my work and see what I have produced and reflect on my progress. I will seek advice from my teacher and my peers as this allows me to make my photography better and more creative. The reason I will take advice from them is because it lets me push myself and be more motivated to get to the next level. The way that I am going to do this is by watching tutorials and demonstrations to help me to achieve what I want to. This will make me develop in my skills and knowledge of photoshop. Once I have finished doing my portfolio I will then write my evaluation on this project as a whole, To do this I would write about what went well and what I could do differently next time.

Research
Edward Weston
context
Edward Weston
EDWARD WESTON(AMERICAN, 1886 - 1958)
I have been researching Edward Weston and this is the information I have found from the interment:
"Edward Weston, an American photographer was born in Highland Park, Illinois. Weston began to make photographs in Chicago parks in 1902, and his works were first exhibited in 1903 at the Art Institute of Chicago. Three years later he moved to California and opened a portrait studio in a Los Angeles suburb. The Western landscape soon became his principal subject matter. In the 1930s, Weston and several other photographers, including Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Willard van Dyke, formed the f/64 group, which greatly influenced the aesthetics of American photography. In 1937, Weston received the first Guggenheim Fellowship awarded to a photographer, which freed him from earning a living as a portraitist. The works for which he is famous–sharp, stark, brilliantly printed images of sand dunes, nudes, vegetables, rock formations, trees, cacti, shells, water, and human faces are among the finest of 20th-century photographs; their influence on modern art remains inestimable".

Edward Western uses contrast of black & white to create his images that stand out and are very effective. This contrast in colour makes the detail in the cabbage leaf stand out as there is light and dark shades that enhance the leaf structure. The cabbage has been placed on an infinitely curved background so there is no separation between the table which the cabbage has been placed on and the background. In my opinion he has used an infinity curve to create a better finish and it stops any other detail being shown so that the cabbage becomes the only thing to focus on.
He has taken the image from a forward facing shoot and the focal point to me is the middle and bottom part where the dark shade starts.
He has used a large depth of field as the whole cabbage is in focus. I personally believe that this picture was shot in a studio due to the background and the lightning. The texture is standing out because the lighting used highlights the areas in shot. I can see that the lighting is coming from the bottom right hand side and this is a technique I might use in my own work.

I decided to look at different photographers I am really interested in photographers who use light and dark. I am currently locking at Edward Weston because he has a range of different photography skills focused on a light to dark shades and it is very interesting how he takes pictures of different shapes and objects. His work relates to mine because he has captured texture, he has taken a vegetable and made it look interesting.

I like his photography because of the way he uses different techniques to improve his work such as he uses his angles to get the right picture, his ISO settings and the way he is cropping making the picture be the best quality. This is something I will consider when taking my photographs.

Siskins began to photograph in 1932, while he was an English teacher in the New York City public-school system. As a member of the photo league, he participated in projects designed to document neighborhood life during the Depression. Unlike other documentary series of the period, Siskin's Dead End: The Bowery and Harlem Document show as much concern for pure design as for the plight of his subjects. After the late 1930s, Siskins no longer photographed people, concentrating instead on architectural photography, as in his series Old Houses of Bucks County, and on natural phenomena and still life.

In my opinion the main thing that stands out to me the most is the use of black and white the texture goes in different directions. The composition in this photo has been taken from a bird's eye view and has been captured to create the shape in the image.
I feel like this picture has been taken at a certain time of the day, maybe midday because the image looks light. If it was late they would not have captured the line so clearly.
In this image the background stands out because it is a dark colour and a large depth of field has been used because everything is in focus. The line is the foreground.
The use of colour allows the viewer to zoom into the texture and observe the photo. When I look at this photo I can see the texture in the white line which is cracked in certain points.
I can tell that this photo was not taken in a studio because you can see the outline of the little stones and the rocks and it is clearly a road surface.

This is image shows the texture of a road surface and paint. It creates areas that are highlighted by the paint making the section stand out more. It also show a contrast in black and white. This is a technique I could use in my work. I like how the image has been cropped and how it has been controlled the composition of the image has defiantly been consider before the image was taken. I will remember to think about composition when creating my images.

I like this image because it stands out and it shows texture. This is a painted road marking something that I walk pass everyday and do not take any notice of it. However this photographer has taken the image and turned it black and white the way the image is has been captured has given it a different look. I like the idea of taking images of every day things and making them different. This the inspiration and idea I will take from this photographer.

Sandra say's "I'm not concerned with the general documentation of nature and landscape , but rather with the aesthetics of natural connections in detail. The spectrum of my nature photographs ranges from classic to my own perception of moments that I try to alienate.
The only tool is the camera. For my interpretation of the environment, I use the possibilities of technology - experimenting with the choice of section, shutter speed & aperture as well as multiple exposures to capture the essence & mood of a place."
A large part of the work was created in analog times on Velvia, newer works mostly digital with Nikon cameras.
The end product is high-quality, limited edition fine art prints on Hahnemühle paper and audiovisual presentations .

Composition
When I look at this image I can easily tell that Sandra Bartocha has used the rule of thirds by creating a foreground being the orange bracken against the green fern and have used the trees as the mid ground and a misty grey colour as the background which fades away. The colours used are contrasting; the orange bracken takes up one third of the image.
To me the dark brown tree to the right frames the image and my eye is drawn to it because of the dark colour against the orange. She uses composition well as the dark brown tree leads my eye to the rest of the trees that go to to the left of the image.
This image is full of colour mainly orange with splashes of green that stand out with a fade of grey. The little drops of yellow leaves stand out at the front of the picture adding more texture to the image. The trees have different colors because one is brown, one is darker, one is white and one is thin brown all contain lots of detail and texture. I can see a triangle created from the dark brown tree at the front which has been created with the rest of the trees.
The textures of the wood look rough and tactile. This image may have been taken in the morning due to the fact that the sun is out. She has angled her camera so it is not at eye level because she captures the bracken, leaves and grass and the bottom of the tree trunks. I think she has held the camera at an angle looking downwards and a bit tilted. When displaying her pictures she explains about what she has done to get the final image, how she has used her camera techniques and how she has used photoshop to crop and enhance this image.

Connection
This image connects to my work as I have to create images that show texture. This image is full of texture and colour but has been taken using a mid depth of field as there is a lot in the image. I will begin my project by taking close ups of images that show texture I will then use this style of work as it will allow me to show a contrast by taking images of texture in a outdoor location.
It also looks like she has taken it in autumn because the leaves are orange in colour and have fallen off the trees. Capturing texture in a season is a good idea to do and will give me a different approach to my work. This is a good time of year to take a good outdoor photo because the trees and leaves look amazing and the change of colour is noticeable.

Comment
I unfortunately do not like this photo due to the reason that it looks very boring also in my opinion the picture does looks a bit blurry. Therefore it does not make the picture look as good as it could of been. She is a professional photographer and what makes her stand out is that she uses different camera techniques and her use of colour. This picture also links to my work because it is part of texture and my photos Will be inspired by the use of colour in work. She is inspiring because I do like the way she uses her camera she uses rule of third, contrast and lines.
